Overview: What Makes This Song Great

Written by the late Freddie Mercury, “Bohemian Rhapsody” was a major 1976 hit for the rock group Queen, reaching the #1 spot on the U.K. charts and again in 1991, soon after Mercury’s death. The song was amazingly unique as it had several movements that included an intro, before sequencing to a ballad, to Brian May’s instantly recognizable guitar solo, a switch to opera, then hard rock, before the finale, or outro.

The style and the heavy use of 128 vocal overdubs was not a first for Queen, they birthed that style and dubbing on their first album with the track, “My Fairy King.” And although “Bohemian Rhapsody” wasn’t an instant hit, and may have suffered some from mixed reviews, that didn’t last long. In the States the track would reach #9 on the charts, but would later make it’s way to Billboard again in 1992 to #2, having been featured in Wayne’s World by those most excellent dudes, Wayne Campbell (Mike Meyers) and Garth Algar (Dana Carvey). In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine would rank Bohemian Rhapsody #163 as one of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Mercury came up with the name Queen for the group that had evolved from the British band Smile. Along with Freddie and Brian May, the group would also include the major talents of John Deacon (bass) and Roger Meddows-Taylor (drums). Freddie would die in 1991 of bronchial pneumonia, as a result of AIDS. But, he lives on in his music and has been recognized by sales of Queen albums that have topped 300 million, seven Ivor Novello awards for the group’s songwriting and Queen’s 2001 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
