Overview: What Makes This Song Great

System of a Down Toxicity

System of a Down Toxicity

Though it never reached the heights of some of their other songs, including “B.Y.O.B.” and “Chop Suey,” System of a Down’s “Toxicity” was still ranked by VH1 as the 14th best Metal Song of all time, and remains to this day as one of their most recognizable songs. Coming to the modern metal scene with a highly unique and personalized sound, System of a Down’s use of diverse rhythms, tones, harmonies and tempos makes them one of the few bands to stand out among today’s crowded metal scene, and “Toxicity” is a showcase for all of these songwriting techniques and more.

The guitar parts run the gamut from clean-picked arpeggio patterns, to thrash-based rhythm tracks, complete with palm muting and oddly-grouped notes, and everything in between. The one thing that makes the song easier to learn, is that is broken up into very distinct sections. When first sitting down to tackle a song like “Toxicity,” which twists and turns into unexpected territory, a good plan of attack is to divide the song up into its different sections and then learn them one at a time. Once you’ve got each section down, just put them all together and voila, you’ve got the song under your fingers.
