Fear of the Dark
Head out to an Iron Maiden’s gig and you’ll most likely still hear them play “Fear of the Dark,” from the 1992 album of the same name. It’s a crowd favorite and when released hit #5 on the U.K. charts. When Maiden played the song at the huge South American rock festival, Rock in Rio, their fans sang along, 250,000 fans strong – with the opening guitar duet, before joining in with arms raised and fists pumping.
Bass guitar player, Steve Harris, formed Iron Maiden in east London back in 1975, fostering the British heavy metal scene and keeping the flame alive by selling over 100 million albums worldwide. The group’s U.S. platinum albums include: The Number of the Beast (1982); Piece of Mind (1983); Powerslave (1984); Live After Death (1985); Somewhere in Time (1986) and more, including their latest release The Final Frontier that ran up the album charts to the #1 spot around the world.
At the 53rd Grammy Awards, Iron Maiden’s “El Dorado” won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance (February 13, 2011). But, grabbing top metal honors at the Metal Hammer Awards seven times has to give Steve Harris and his mates a particularly high sense of satisfaction and gratitude for their fans.
