Evolving from an earlier song titled “Hey Jules,” which Paul McCartney wrote for John Lennon’s son Julian to comfort him after his parent’s divorce, “Hey Jude” has since become one of the Beatles’ most recognized and best-loved songs. At over 7 minutes in length, it was, at the time, the longest single ever to top the charts. It was also the longest running number 1 single by the Beatles, staying at the top of the U.S. charts for 9 weeks, and the single has sold over 8 million copies since it’s 1968 release with the song “Revolution” as it’s B-side.
Though the song is mostly played by McCartney on the piano, the chord progression is one of the most memorable of the 20th century, and is easily transferable to the guitar. In order to make the chart easier to play for guitarists of all levels, there is a capo added to the 1st fret, so that most of the chords can be played in open position. If you’re looking to step it up a notch, you can take the capo off and play the song using barre chords, providing the same sound as with the capo, but with more of a challenge for advanced players.
