Blasting out of the Windy City in 2002, alt-rockers Chevelle burst onto the international scene with their hit record Wonder What’s Next.” Though the band would go on to release the ever-popular “Send the Pain Below,” their most well-known song at the time, and to this day, is “The Red.” Writing about anger and frustration, lead singer Pete Loeffler is featured in the video taking the podium at an anger management meeting, where he professes the song’s verses to the meeting’s members. Though it is a common topic for ‘90s and turn of the century rock bands to tackle, “The Red” has stood the test of time and continues to be a fan favorite at Chevelle shows worldwide.
From a guitarist’s standpoint, “The Red” offers up some tasty riffs to check out and get under your fingers. Using light and heavy distortion, as well as palm muting, Loeffler lays down solid rhythm work, and though there is no guitar solo in the song, the intro and verse riffs are as good as they get. This may not be the most challenging song to get down on the guitar, but it’s a fun track to play along with while working on taking your modern rock rhythm chops to the next level.
