The guitar work on the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 1992 release “Under the Bridge” has become recognizable the world over, and was hugely influential in launching the band onto the world’s stage. But this very same riff, which was penned by then Peppers guitarist John Frusciante, would also be one of the reasons behind the guitarist leaving the band. Frusciante preferred that the band remain underground, he didn’t want to fortune and fame that came with being a hugely successful band, and so he left that same year, being replaced by Jesse Tobias, and on a more permanent basis by former Jane’s Addiction axeman Dave Navarro.
While he didn’t stay around long enough to enjoy the initial success that was bestowed upon the band, Frusciante would return later in the decade to rejoin his fellow Peppers both live and in the studio, the guitarist left his mark on the band and the guitar world as a whole. Every guitarist who’s a fan of ‘90s rock and the alternative genre should take a few days and get this song under their fingers. The opening lick alone is worth learning from both a groove and chord voicing perspective.
