“The Trooper” has long been one of Iron Maiden’s most well-loved songs, and one that remains in the band’s set to this very day. Inspired by the poem “The Charge of the Light Brigade,” Maiden frontman Bruce Dickenson will often dress up in an army jacket when the band plays the song live and carry around a giant Union Jack flag. The song features many of Maiden’s characteristic musical elements, dual lead lines, two guitar solos, galloping rhythm guitar work (emulating horses on the battlefield) and multiple sections that go beyond the normal verse-chorus setup of most rock tracks.
The first solo on the original recording was laid down by Adrian Smith while the second is played by Dave Murray. As the band has undergone some lineup changes over the years, guitarist Janick Gers has performed the first solo in a live situation while Smith was on hiatus from Maiden. In recent years, as the band has worked with all three axemen at the same time, the dual lead breaks have grown into triple lead lines, provided an extra harmonic voice, beefing up those sections in the process.
There are plenty of challenges to overcome when learning “The Trooper.” You have to nail the galloping feel of the rhythm part, drag out your best ‘80s metal tone on the lead breaks and master the energetic solo sections before learning this song is complete. Regardless, it’s a great track to work through as it provides a solid look at the musical elements that made and continue to make Maiden great.
