“To The One” by John McLaughlin and The 4th Dimension

by Vince Lewis

There are many musicians that stand the test of time.  In the jazz genre, guitar players generally find their niche and remain there.  While their skills and repertoire may mature, listeners know what to expect musically. This CD is all original material that clearly shows John McLaughlin is constantly evolving.  He has proven himself in many arenas and is always pushing the envelope of new ideas.

John McLaughlin has been a pillar of the jazz guitar community for over 30 years.  He has played with many of the legendary musicians of our time.  McLaughlin has explored his acoustic side as well as pioneering the fusion movement.  As a sideman or leader his work has been exemplary and interesting.  Whether working with Miles Davis or leading the Mahavishnu Orchestra McLaughlin’s reputation for excellence has grown deservedly.

This new release is a tribute in kind to John Coltrane and his classic recording “A Love Supreme.”  McLaughlin has assembled a new band that is a true powerhouse of energy and talent.  It is comprised of Gary Husband (keyboard, drums), Etienne M’Bappe (electric bass), and Mark Mondesir (drums).  Each musician is flawless technically and world class.  The solos are exciting and creative, and the role of the rhythm section is played perfectly as well.

This project opens with “Discovery” which gives the individual artists a chance to shine right out of the gate.  McLaughlin rips through the up tempo melody and solos with a lightly distorted sound.  His playing is cleanly executed and the excitement of the band is evident throughout.  Next up is “Special Beings,” which is a very pretty modern jazz waltz. Other titles include “The Fine Line,” “Lost And Found,” “Recovery” and the title track “To The One.”  Each composition is musically well crafted and executed.

This is truly one of the finest jazz / rock recordings available.  The musicianship and energy of the group should be a model for any aspiring professional player.  This is a truly outstanding group led by one of the finest guitarist around.  It is sure to become one of the all time classics of this genre.

CD available April 20, 2010.
