NAMM Show 2010: Alex Skolnick Trio Kicks Ass and Takes Names

By: Staff

If NAMM Show attendees thought that they’d be able to walk into the Marriot Hotel lobby after a long day on the showroom floor and relax with a cold drink and some quiet music, they were sorely mistaken. Taking to the Hotel’s center stage at 6pm, just as the first day’s exhibits closed, the Alex Skolnick Trio cranked it to 11 and rocked the crowd with their unique blend of rock, metal and jazz as only they can.

The trio, featuring a kick ass performance by Matt Zebroski on drums and Nathan Peck on bass, played a mix of older originals, rock classics such as “Detroit Rock City” and “Still Loving You” by the Scorpions, as well as gave the crowd a taste of some of the new material from their upcoming album Veritas, which the band also gave away sampler CD’s of to the appreciative crowd.

Skolnick was at the top of his game during the 60 minute set. Playing his Signature Heritage Guitar, and running through his Signature Budda Amp, the guitarist mixed slow, melodic lines with blistering fast runs, at one point unleashing a series of sweep-picked arpeggios that would’ve made Yngwie Malmsteen take note, Skolnick’s playing ran the gamut from jazz, to blues, to rock to metal, all while hyping up the crowd and wowing the audience at the same time. I’ve heard Alex on records before with this trio, but nothing compares to seeing them live on stage.

While I’m sure some people would rather have just enjoyed a quiet evening at the hotel bar after a crazy long day at work, the crowd showed no signs of exhaustion as they cheered on Alex and company through their one hour set. As a side note, it was great to see a jazz band, even though they mix in other genres throughout their set, get such a positive response from an audience that was made up of long-haired, leather wearing metal heads. Maybe jazz isn’t dead after all.
