The Story of 016, Part One (December 23, 2008)

I was going to write the next series about a non-guitar related art piece but I changed my mind. About a year ago I was commissioned to build a guitar for a client. When I first accepted the order I wasn’t going to be starting it for awhile so we left the details hanging. As the start date got closer, the client asked about making it an art piece. For me this is the best of all worlds, mix my two great passions, guitars and visual art! We talked about which way to go with this piece. He asked me if I had anything that I had been wanting to do. I have many fine artists that I have worked with over the years, so I initially thought that maybe we should tap into one of them and do a “fine art” painted piece, but I also offered an option that had been brewing in my sick little brain for a while... Building Number One - Part Five - Final (August 21, 2008)

It seems like I’m always starting these columns off by apologizing for it being so long since my last installment, so I figure why change now! Sorry, it’s been so freakin’ long! Okay, now I feel better. I actually finished Number One back in January of this year. Since then I’ve been working my old-man-tail off building the rest of the first batch of P-1s, which I just finished shipping in July. Then I went full bore filling guitar stand orders and a couple of other art commissions that have been outstanding for the past year-ish. WHEW! It’s been a hell of a couple of years! So, when I left you all hanging back in January, I had just finished painting the neck. The body was in cure. Now it’s time to fab the pickguard and electronic assemblies, sand and buff the body and neck, assemble it all, tune/test, etc. Here we go… Continue reading "Building Number One - Part Five - Final"

I am way past my initial time estimates for all of my clients and I’m feeling extremely guilty about it. I’d really like to start out by thanking all of them for their kind support and patience this first year of my new guitar venture. Thanks guys! As promised, this installment will cover the last half of the fabrication of the neck. There are a ton of steps throughout the building process, in fact that’s one of the reasons I thought this would be a good column. A lot of folks just don’t realize what really goes into building a guitar by hand. There are so many steps that I can not show them all here. I’ve tried to include as many of the steps as possible, but unfortunately some are not shown, especially in the paint booth. Nevertheless, let’s start where we left off, with a sized, glued up neck laminate with the peghead veneer glued on as well... The biggest bummer was while I was carving the back shape into the neck for 001 an 1¼” long by 3/16” wide black/green stain on the visible side of 001's neck appeared… ain’t that a bitch! After all the time, energy and dollars committed to the beautiful neck of 001 this stain shows up… neck lost! Welcome to the wonderful world of guitar building. I talked to the customer, Eddie, and unfortunately he didn’t like any of the alternatives I had available to him, so I had to start the search for the right Brazilian fretboard again, as well as start the neck fabrication over. Fortunately, the amazing vendor I had for the Brazilian was able to send me several more fretboards almost immediately.
