Joe Bonamassa - Live At Rockpalast (March 15, 2006) Joe Bonamassa is on tour right now. But you'd better hurry if you want tickets because they sell out fast. For those who won't get to see the show, and for those who will, yet want more, the smokin' guitarist has released a new DVD. Joe Bonamassa - Live At Rockpalast was recorded in Germany, on June 28th, 2005. It's an eleven-song set in which Joe pulls out all the stops. There's a little bit of everything he's known for on it, a lot of what you might expect out of a performer of such excellence, and a lot that will awe fans, especially those seeing and hearing him for the first time. Joe opts between four guitars onstage here: his ribbon candy colored signature Gigliotti Tele, his Les Paul, his gold sparkling Strat, and his Chandler LectraSlide. His tone is awesome throughout. Though his voice is better than most blues-rock vocalists, his guitar is where it's at. The band, made up of an above average rhythm section, often takes flight into numerous jams, steering off course in tasteful tangents as well. The set opener, 'Takin' The Hit', lifts off with an amazing instrumental before the vocal comes in. His Gigliotti Tele is featured here, and the tone is fantastic. Joe never ceases to amaze with his nostalgic additives, which often coerce smiles to the faces of his fans. He has a tendency to go off into little teases, letting you know where his influences lie. You hear signature riffs from things like ZZ Top's 'Waiting For The Bus' and Frampton's 'Do You Feel Like We Do'. His flirtation with Jeff Beck's 'Ended As Lovers' in the intro to Rod Stewart's 'Blues Deluxe' is stunning, and it's all accented with his Strat's pot controls. He often flaunts his love for the music of others anyway, as most fans already know. Also in the set are his versions of Tull's 'A New Day Yesterday', John Lee Hooker's 'Burning Hell' (which really drives, in a Hooker or George Thorogood manner), Steve Winwood's 'Had To Cry Today', and Yes' 'Heart Of The Sunrise' and 'Starship Trooper'. Add in a few Bonamassa gems (including the haunting, 'The River) and you've got a diverse set of excellent guitar fronted music, all presented by a fantastic trio. This is an excellent DVD.
