Envision in your mind’s eye a stage that resembles a demented Santa’s workshop straight from Hell, a pants-less Santa Claus, several wicked snow blowing elves, and three sexy girls pulling Dee on a hot rodded sleigh. Sound like a Christmas fairy tale? Not quite, more like the Twisted Christmas Spectacular at the Best Buy Theater in New York City!

From the stage of the sold out Izod Center in New Jersey, Rob Halford told the crowd that Judas Priest were playing tonight in front of 7,000 Metal Maniacs! No truer words could have been spoken.

As a lifelong Rush fan and a nascent (“wanna-be”) drummer, it was with no small level of excitement that I popped in the new Neil Peart instructional DVD, Taking Center Stage. With a track listing comprised of Rush’s 2010/2011 “Time Machine” tour set list, which featured the entire Moving Pictures album, this release is a fulfillment of many Rush fans’ long-held wishes, as it offers a chance to see what Peart is actually doing on many classic Rush songs.

A large, prehistoric animal spots you. It takes a few lumbering, earth-shaking steps in your direction and then, unannounced, it breaks out into a gallop, charging at you and your fellow tribesmen, swinging its monstrous tusks back and forth, and trumpeting as it bears down on your position.

I finally got to see Metallica play after the 18 years it has been since Metallica’s last show in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Rock The Hill, the all day festival, had rain for most of the day during the openers spots, but just before Metallica hit the stage the sky showed the colors of a great evening to come. The all-day event featured Prince Edward Island’s Death Valley Driver, Matt Mays, Protest The Hero, Seether and Coheed and Cambria. who all delivered great performances.

One of the many common misconceptions about Death Metal is that people think Death Metal musicians and fans are all about violence and death. It makes sense really; the genre is called DEATH Metal, and one look at the lyrics of any song is enough to make any God-fearing man crap his pants. What outsiders fail to realize is that the so-called “headbangers” do all this in good fun; for the most part. There are always the black metal bands who burn churches and torture people, but they are NOT Death Metal. They are just lumped in to this genre by people who don’t know better. Death Metal is really all about having a great time.
