With the proliferation of guitar brands, luthiers, manufacturers and technologies, it could be easy to lose sight of the the fact that before quality craftsmanship, the true beauty of the steel and string sound of a quality acoustic guitar starts with the specific selection of quality woods, known as tone woods in the industry, with which the guitar is crafted. Though acoustic guitar makers (known as luthiers) have explored vast combinations of different domestic and exotic woods with which to produce a quality sounding (and long-lasting) guitar, there are several species of woods that luthiers continue to use as “old reliable” species because of their long standing history of producing quality instrument with specific tone qualities or “personalities.”

Dickey Betts, founding member of the Allman Brothers Band and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer will take his Great Southern Band to Sarasota, FL this November 12th and 13th to headline the Dan Toler ALS Support Benefit Festival. Being held at Herschberger Ranch in Sarasota, the benefit will raise funds for Toler’s ongoing battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), widely known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

With a track listing comprised of Rush’s 2010/2011 “Time Machine” tour set list, which featured the entire Moving Pictures album, this release is a fulfillment of many Rush fans’ long-held wishes, as it offers a chance to see what Peart is actually doing on many classic Rush songs.

Australian guitarist Joe Matera has had an exciting year so far in 2011, which has already seen multiple releases from the tasteful guitar player. According to a press release, he appeared on UK metal legends Atomkraft’s new release, Cold Sweat, to which he contributed a ripping solo to their aggressive cover of Thin Lizzy’s “Cold Sweat,” and has also released a solo instrumental single, entitled “Face Off.” Both releases showcase his energetic, yet melodic six-string action and have brought his music to a larger international audience.
