Guitarist blues master, Tal Naccarato, recently won the Long Island Blues Society’s 2022 Solo/Duo Competition and will soon be headed to Memphis, Tennessee, to show his chops to compete in The Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge. The IBC is scheduled to be held January 24-28, 2023, on the legendary Beale Street.

A musical romp of a show of stunningly masterful blues guitar, storytelling and a fine array of vocals by an aficionado of guitar, Toby Walker, at the 37-year old Reston-Herndon Folk Club in Northern Virginia, kept the audience captivated, song after song, story after story. Offering up traditional old blues tunes and more contemporary blues of his own, Walker, plucked, bent and made his Huss & Dalton guitar shimmer with a full bag of tricks, honed over decades of playing the usual and unusual haunts in the States and overseas.

Last night at Alexandria, Virginia’s legendary Birchmere Music Hall, Steve Earle and The Dukes rolled out an evening of country roots tangled with an eclectic mix of songs welded together by Earle’s vocals immersed in grit, beautifully crafted songwriting, and his amazing band whose melodic twists and turns, and hot licks “could suck the chrome off a trailer hitch”, in the purloined words of Willie Nelson.

I have always thought of myself in my own way, as being part of the “Washington D.C. Telecaster tradition”. I always brought more than one guitar on a tour or to a concert, and one of them was usually a Telecaster. There would be a part of the show where I would strap on a Telecaster, joke about “it’s Tele time!”

Hilton Valentine, The Animals’ original guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, died on January 29, 2021 at his Connecticut home. He was 77 years old.Born on May 21, 1943, near Newcastle, England, Hilton first picked up a guitar after being caught up in the skiffle craze that was spearheaded by Lonnie Donegan, whose cover of “Rock Island Line” became a Top 10 hit in both England and America.
