Rare 1960s Guitar That Helped Define Jimi Hendrix’s Iconic Career Sells for $216,000 at GWS Auctions

GWS Auctions, the world recording breaking royal auction house specializing in entertainment and music memorabilia sold a rare, historical guitar played by Jimi Hendrix for $216,000 at the Artifacts of Hollywood & Music Auction.

The final bid price was well over the original estimate of $50,000. The guitar, was an early 1960s Japanese Sunburst electric guitar that was played by the legendary icon in the early years and before he found fame.

The 1960s Jimi Hendrix electric guitar was bought by a group of friends and given to Hendrix during a time when money was short and he played gigs.

Hendrix passed away at the age of 28 leaving behind a legacy of authentic, experimental defining music that is revered to this day. A Jimi Hendrix personally owned guitar strap sold for $6,875. 

Other highlights of the highly anticipated Artifacts of Hollywood and Music auction include an Elvis Presley Diamond, Blue Sapphire and 14K Gold ring which sold for $26,875; A Steve Jobs owned and word Seiko watch which sold for $8,125; a Michael Jackson signed black sequin custom jacket which sold for $30,000; an Oscar Pumpin One-a-Kind T-Rex Bumper Sculpture which sold for $11,875; a pair of Charlie Chaplin personally owned and word glasses in case which sold for $5,300; Elvis Presley’s Neo Style Yellow sunglasses which sold for $8,125; Lady Gaga’s Haus Lab photoshoot worn custom boa which sold for $10,625; a Dustin Hoffman costume marked “Dustin 1” from the movie “Hook”(1991) sold for $18,000; Sharon Tate’s owned silk brassiere sold for $2,625 and Brandon Lee’s distressed 3-pc costume from “The Crow” sold for $25,000.
