Foghat Channel Their Inner Blues Rock on Last Train Home

By: William Clark

Best known for their chart topping radio hits “Slow Ride” and “Fool For The City”, boogie rock masters Foghat, channel their inner blues rock with their latest album, Last Train Home.

When you think about it, a lot of Foghat’s music has had some strong elements of the blues mixed in a cauldron of crunching guitars and rocketing vocals.

So, this seeming insane sounding jump of genres is something; a band only the likes of Foghat could pull off and make it work. In Last Train Home, they not only pull it off, but,do so masterfully.

The album slowly builds your anticipation, and then jumps to freight train speeds with “Born for the Road”, which honestly could’ve easily found a comfortable home on any one of the band’s earlier efforts.

With a surplus of slamming chords and a dynamite chorus, this song alone could carry the rest of this album’s weight. But, thankfully it doesn’t need to, because Last Train Home keeps you rocking ‘n’ rolling until your final station.

The title track is built around a moderately paced blues rock beat that gets your foot tapping along to the thunderous drum beats, while tunes such as “So Many Roads, So Many Trains” showcase some passionate guitar soloing and bring things back down nice and slow.

Last Train Home also has two tracks featuring blues legend Eddie ‘Bluesman’ Kirkland, titled “In My Dreams” and “Good Good Day”. These two have Eddie manning lead vocal duties, while Foghat lead vocalist, Charlie Huhn, provides some dynamite harmonies when each song hits the chorus.

Mr. Kirkland also lays down some vibrant lyrics that make you just sit back and laugh! For example, in “Good Good Day”: “I’m glad to see you coming home! I got a little change in my pocket, I’m gonna take you out and buy you dinner. Take you down to McDonalds, and buy the best dinner McDonalds got!”

For a truly nostalgic listening experience, this album is also available in a beautiful double blue vinyl package that should drive collectors and diehards insane! Overall, I have to say that considering the nearly complete switch in genres, Last Train Home is a simply dynamite record that should not only appeal to Foghat’s army of fans, but to any blues lover.
