Motorhead Concert Review: 35th Anniversary Tour

By: Rob Cavuoto

One of the most iconic rock’ n’ roll bands in history, Motörhead, is out touring the US to celebrate the band’s 35th anniversary and the release their new studio album The Wörld is Yours. This latest release sold 7,000 copies in US in its first week to land at No. 94 on The Billboard 200 chart, and to-date has sold over 100,000 copies, an achievement Lemmy was proud to point out during an interview prior to the show, saying it was the bands best-selling CD yet.

Tonight at the Starland Ballroom in NJ, Lemmy, Phil and Mikkey put on a kick ass rock and roll show. From their opening song “We are Motörhead,” to the encore “Overkill,” the band pulled out all the stops and unleashed a barrage of metal classics one after another to the sold out crowd.

The band was certainly excited to hit the stage high on the success of their latest release, and the razed fans could only help fuel the fire. If you’re wondering if a Motörhead concert is as loud as people make it out to be, loud is an understatement. Between Lemmy’s low end growling vocals and his Marshall bass rig turned to 11, the club rumbled, vibrated and shook off its foundation. A day later my ears are still ringing, and I wore ear plugs to which another concert- goer kindly questioned whether I was a true Motörhead fan because I was wearing them.

The set list is well chosen, spanning 3 decades with the band playing for 90 minutes. Stand out songs of the night were obvious with “Ace of Spades” and “Killed by Death.” Songs like “Get Back in Line” and “I Know How to Die,” from their latest release, were extremely well received and fit nicely into the set.

Though the band is wrapping up this leg of the US tour, Metal fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Lemmy told me he has no plans of retiring any time soon, or would ever consider selling out to a fake farewell tour. A true man of integrity!
