Armed with a rebellious sneer and campy vulgar swagger, British punk rocker Billy Idol laid down some of the best angst-ridden performances during the 1980s. His 1982 self-titled album included “White Wedding”, a track that’s more New Wave than hard punk, and the song still resonates with his fans. The video, featuring Billy’s girlfriend at the time, Perri Lister, as the bride in a Goth wedding scene rocks along with the track’s drumming synchronized with a hammer nailing down a coffin lid. Some have claimed that the bride was a slam at Billy’s real-life sister’s fiancé’, but the singer disputed that during a VHI Storytellers episode, claiming the video was mere “fantasy.”
Billy Idol’s first claim to fame was with the mid-‘70s punk band, Generation X, that veered away from its punk roots to more of a pop sound, that has remained a staple of Idol’s style. In “White Wedding” the singer nearly croons his way through the song, with a sound adulterated with more camp than angst. “White Wedding” nailed down a #4 position on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks list, while Billy’s other songs “Rebel Yell” (#9); “Dancing with Myself” (#102) and “Eyes Without a Face” (#5) and others fared well too. And Rock Band II features “White Wedding” on its track list.
With gold and platinum albums as part of his legacy, three-time Grammy nominee, Billy Idol has been able to build a world-wide fan base. Billy’s also got some film credits to his name, including playing the character “Cat,” Jim Morrison’s drinking buddy, in Oliver Stone’s feature film, The Doors, and a bit part in Adam Sandler’s Wedding Singer.
