Blues. Just the word alone conjures up a wave of sounds, emotions and images. B.B. King playing his cherished Lucille, Robert Johnson, big smile on his face, sitting with his acoustic guitar, hat tilted off to one side, of musicians selling their souls to the devil for a chance at stardom. The Blues is a powerful music, and a genre that is at once a truly American art form, and at the same time a universal musical language that is spoken across the globe. Anyone who has felt the pain of a love lost, of striving to better their lot in life or who have shared in the common emotional struggles that define humanity can understand the blues.

Having a working knowledge and understanding of the guitar fretboard is absolutely essential if you want to be able to solo, improvise, or compose on the guitar. Learning riffs and licks to your favorite pop songs can only take you so far. You might know how to play these from tab or even by ear, but do you really know what you are playing and how it all connects together?
